Early on in the life of this newsletter, inspired by a piece Alex Aciman wrote for Dirt, I shared a collection of my open tabs. These weren’t just tabs of articles I had read and felt others should read, but a true portrait of links I had opened and let linger in my browser, maybe because I wanted to revisit them, but often because I opened a link shared on Twitter or in something I read and then didn’t make time to actually read or explore that thing. As Aciman suggested in his piece, they were a collection of intentions more than a telling portrait of who I was or what I thought. Because it has been hot this week and I can’t seem to muster much thought about anything, I thought I would do a round two of this open tabs collection. Currently, I have enough tabs open on my phone that Google Chrome1 has given up counting them — a little smiley face sits in place of any definitive number.
Below you’ll find 50 of my current rotation of open tabs, listed from most recent to ones open the longest. I’ve opened and closed tabs since I decided to do this a few days ago; otherwise this is what my mobile browser has looked like for the last little while (I’m pretty sure I opened #50 in March). This time, I kept in my shopping tabs. Like last time I’ve starred what I’ve read (you’ll see not many) and added commentary where I felt moved to:
“The Gulf Stream,” Winslow Homer Met page — Looked this up because it’s the cover of Vinson Cunningham’s Great Expectations, which I just finished reading
